Life and Work in the Maldives
The Maldives is a chain of more than 1,000 islands in the Indian Ocean. Most building work takes place in Malé, Hulhumalé and on resort islands. Workers may travel by boat between sites, so the routine is different from the Gulf.
The climate is hot and humid all year. Rain showers are common between May and October. Light cotton clothes and good work boots are a must.
The Maldives is a Muslim country, and local customs are respected strictly. Alcohol is not allowed on local islands. Pakistani workers usually settle in quickly because of the shared faith.
